Inside a snake handling church deep in Appalachia, a forbidden relationship forces a pastor’s daughter to confront her community’s deadly tradition.

Production[edit]

In August 2017, it was announced Olivia Colman, Alice Englert and Thomas Mann had joined the cast of the film, with Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage directing from a screenplay they wrote. Gerard Butler, Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant, Danielle Robinson, will serve as producers on the film, under their Amsia Entertainment and G-Base banners, respectively.^[2] In September 2017, Walton Goggins joined the cast of the film.^[3] In October 2017, Kaitlyn Dever and Jim Gaffigan joined the cast of the film.^[4][5]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began in October 2017.^[6]

Release[edit]

It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2019.^[7] Shortly after, 1091 Media and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired U.S. and international distribution rights to the film, respectively.^[8][9] It is scheduled to be released on August 2, 2019.^[10]

Critical reception[edit]

Them That Follow holds 68% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 reviews, with a weighted average of 6.4/10.^[11] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 53 out of 100, based on 7 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.^[12]
